How do I begin the NPI process?
Use the Internet-based application established by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), located on the web at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Welcome.do

Are you currently accepting NPI on claims?
Yes, we are presently accepting and transmitting NPI numbers.

We are currently transmitting claims to ppoNEXT using the ANSI X12N 837A1 837 format. Do we need to make any adjustments for NPI?
Other than including the NPI number, no.

Will ppoNEXT reject claims for not including NPI after May 23, 2007?
No. We will continue to reprice claims that contain sufficient data to permit repricing.

Will ppoNEXT require testing?
No. We will conduct internal testing to ensure that our systems and processes are running smoothly before the implementation due date.

Will ppoNEXT support the dual transmission of NPI and legacy identifiers during the transition period of October 1, 2006 to May 23, 2007?
Yes, we have the capacity to maintain both data elements in our claims repricing application.

What is your strategy for handling electronic provider transactions once providers obtain their NPIs?
We are presently capable of receiving and storing NPI numbers if submitted.

Will you require providers to continue using their existing provider identification numbers in electronic transactions?
Yes, as this is an integral component of our claims repricing application.

Will you be able to accept only NPI numbers?
No. Providers must continue to submit their Tax Identification Number.

Will ppoNEXT provider data continue to include your internal provider ID number?
Yes, the data will continue to report our unique provider identification number.

Can your claims repricing system accommodate the new CMS-1500 claim form?
Yes, we are accepting the new claim form ahead of the NPI implementation due date.
